The City
Welcome to Grosseto
Its origins can be traced to the High Middle Ages; the rare remains of greater antiquity found in certain points of the city are not sufficient to prove an Etruscan or Roman origin. In August of 803, San Giorgo's church and much of its property was given in enfiteusi to Ildebrando degli Aldobrandeschi, whose successors were to be counts of the Grosseto area until the end of the 12th century. Thus started the so-called domination of the Aldobrandeschis, under which the city reached the height of its power. It was a true dominion; its independance from the Empire's officials was such, that in 1137, the rulers of Grosseto having refused to submit, the town was besieged by the German troops of Arrigo, duke of Bavaria, settled in Maremma. A town really rich in history that is waiting for you to make you spend unforgettable holidays. You can't miss it.

There's a lot of routes that the town can offer its visitors. In addition to the duomo in romanesque-gothic style, the most interesting monument of the town, which keeps several artworks, there are also the St Francesco's cloister, the Arcaeological and Art Museum of the Maremma, the Diocese's Sacral Art of Grosseto and so on.
