Le origini di Grosseto risalgono all'alto Medio Evo. Gli sporadici ritrovamenti più antichi effettuati in alcuni punti della città non sono sufficienti a provare un'origine Etrusca o Romana. Sin dall' agosto 803 la chiesa di San Giorgio e molti suoi beni vennero dati in anfiteuse ad Ildebrando degli Aldobrandeschi, i cui successori furono conti della Maremma grossetana sino alla fine del XII secolo. Inizio' così il dominio degli Aldobrandeschi, con cui la città raggiunse la sua maggior potenza. Un dominio vero e proprio che permise ai grossetani nel 1137, tanta era l' indipendenza del loro governo dai vicari imperiali, di non arrendersi e venire assediati dalle truppe tedesche calate in Maremma con il duca Arrigo di Baviera. Una città davvero ricca di storia che vi attende per farvi trascorrere vacanze uniche ed indimenticabili. |
|  | Its origins can be traced to the High Middle Ages; the rare remains of greater antiquity found in certain points of the city are not sufficient to prove an Etruscan or Roman origin. In August of 803, San Giorgo's church and much of its property was given in enfiteusi to Ildebrando degli Aldobrandeschi, whose successors were to be counts of the Grosseto area until the end of the 12th century. Thus started the so-called domination of the Aldobrandeschis, under which the city reached the height of its power. It was a true dominion; its independance from the Empire's officials was such, that in 1137, the rulers of Grosseto having refused to submit, the town was besieged by the German troops of Arrigo, duke of Bavaria, settled in Maremma.
