Costruito nel 1788 per volere del granduca Pietro Leopoldo, il forte e' oggi simbolo della citta' che prende il nome proprio da questa fortezza situata nel centro della piazza principale. Ovviamente, il forte e' ricco di storia ed e' meta obbligata per chi ama la cultura. La costruzione venne realizzata per un duplice scopo: da un lato, aveva la funzione di dogana, dall'altro serviva per rendere sicuro l'insediamento degli operai del marmo che, ormai, divenivano sempre piu' numerosi in seguito alle bonifiche leopoldine realizzate alla fine del Settecento. Grazie alla realizzazione del forte, si registro', nel corso dell'Ottocento una crescita dell'industria del marmo e dell'attivita' portuale. Fu cosi', quindi, che si riusci' a trovare il modo di proteggere il deposito di marmi destinati ad altre citta' della penisola come Livorno, Pisa e Napoli. Insomma, un itinerario da non perdere in questa splendida citta'. |
|  | The fortress is nowadays the symbol of the city, whose name come from just this building. The fortress was made in 1788, when the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo decided to build it. The fortress is situated in the centre of the main piazza, and, of course, people who love culture and history must visit it. In fact, this fortress had been built for two reasons: on the one hand, it was a custom house, on the other hand, it defended the marble workers' settlement. In fact, the number of these workers raised after the eighteenth-century reclamations. Therefore, both the marble industry and the commercial activities of the port increased thanks to this building. So, it was able to defend the marble warehouse and to sell with other Italian cities such as Livorno, Pisa and Naples. Nowadays, the tourists cannot miss this touristic itinerary of this beautiful town. |
