The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major
Saint Mary Major
Built to the wishes of Pope Liberius (so that the church is also known by the name of the Liberian Basilica), the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (known, among other things, the name of Santa Maria della Neve of a legend by scone where the Madonna appeared in a dream to the Pope, expressing its desire to build a church where the snow had settled) is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome. On the top of the Esquiline Hill, is the only one to have preserved its original structure, although early Christian enriched by successive additions. Besides being the most important of the churches dedicated to Our Lady, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the best preserved. Do not miss the commemoration of the miracle that takes place annually on August 5, during which, from the top of the structure are released into the air of white petals that give a truly impressive to the spectators.
