Un millenio fa, il territorio sul quale oggi sorge la città di Viareggio era coperto dal mare, e la zona dell’entroterra era costituita da grandi ed estese paludi. Nel 1460 circa, i lucchesi, dopo varie dispute con i pisani, decisero di bonificare le paludi circostanti la costa, assicurandosi in questo modo un saldo approdo per l’importazione e il commercio.
Oggi, pero', la citta' e' una localita' turistica privilegiata, meta prediletta da turisti di tutte le eta' provenienti da tutto il mondo. E come potrebbe non esserlo, viste la sue singolari bellezze circondate da un clima eternamente allegro e vivace.

One millenium ago, the territory on which Viareggio lies today was covered by the sea and the hinterland was formed by big and vast marshes. In about 1460 the inhabitants of Lucca, after various quarrels with the Pisans, decided to reclaim the marshes around the coast, so that they conquered a secure landing place for both the import and the commerce. But, nowadays, the town is privileged touristic destination prefered by every kind of tourists of all ages coming from everywhere in the world, because of its beauties in an eternal cheerful and lively atmosphere.
