E' all'espansione verso settentrione dello stato Romano che si deve la nascita di Pistoia, anche se non sono da escludere precedenti vari insediamenti di popolazioni diverse, quali gli Etruschi, come lasciano presupporre alcuni reperti archeologici ritrovati in prossimità dell'attuale piazza del Duomo. Al principio del II secolo a. C. quando i Romani intrapresero una dura lotta contro le popolazioni Liguri attestate sulle pendici appenniniche, Pistoia doveva essere una città fortificata, oppidum, destinata all'approvvigionamento delle milizie.
