Già dall'antichità le Alpi Apuane hanno dato vita ad attività estrattive di molti minerali come il ferro. Però restano famose in tutto il mondo per l'attività estrattiva del Marmo, dove già i romani anticamente lo usavano per i loro palazzi e per le statue. In seguito grandi artisti come Michelangelo, Bernini e Canova lo modellarono nelle loro grandiose opere. L'attivita estrattiva, fino a pochi anni fa, veniva ancora svolta in condizioni molto difficili. Per far scendere i grandi blocchi di marmo venivano imbracati con grossi cavi e fatti scivolare a valle con l'ausilio di molti operai, lungo ripide vie inclinate, così dette Vie di Lizza. Il marmo posto su questi sentieri, veniva fatto scendere inserendo sotto di esso dei tronchi rotondi di faggio, chiamati appunto Lizze, infatti la Via di Lizza prende il suo nome proprio da questi tronchi cilindrici, o meglio, per estensione, all'intera slitta, con il marmo legato sopra. Molte di queste Vie di Lizza situate in cave dismesse, indicate obbligatoriamente dalle cartine e dalle guide segnalate dal C.A.I., possono anche essere percorse con una certa esperienza.

The Apuan Alps gave rise the digging out of too many minerals such as the iron ore since the ancient time, but they are so famous for the Marble mining; even during the Roman Times it was used for the palaces and the statues. Some artists, such as Michelangelo, Bernini and Canova modelled it for their greatful works of art during the folowing time.
The activity for the mining was very hard till some years ago, and the it happened in difficoult circumstances. The great blocks of marble were slung up by some big ropes and let them slide down by too many workers along the so-called Vie di Lizza, inclined steep slopes. The marble put on this paths was let slide by inserting some round trunks of beeches just called Lizze. In fact, the Via di Lizza takes its name just from this round trunks, or, better, from the all slide with the slung up marble. A lot o this Vie di Lizza, placed in out-of-used quarries, are surely and compulsory indicated in the maps and they are signaled by the C.A.I.'s guides and they can be covered with some experience.
