Un tempo utilizzata come vedetta, oggi la torre ricopre la veste di simbolo della città. Conosciuta un tempo con il nome di Torre della Quarda, venne in seguito chiamata Torre Leon Pancaldo in onore di un navigatore savonese che accompagnò Magellano nel suo primo viaggio di circumnavigazione. Oggi è nota anche con il nome di Torretta.

The tower worked as a lookout in ancient times, and nowadays it's the symbol of the city. It was called Torre della Quarda in past time; therefore, it was called Torre Leon Pancaldo in a sailor's honour: Leon Pancaldo sailed with Magellano during the first circumnavigation of the latter. Nowadays, the tower is also known as the Torretta (the Little Tower).
