Località dalla storia millenaria dove all'inizio del XVI sec. le incursioni dei pirati incominciarono a interessare la Liguria. Nel 1545 partiti dall'Algeria raggiunsero Monterosso e con rapide scorrerie depredarono gli abitanti prevalentemente contadini e obbligarono molti a seguirli. Genova non avendo la possibilità di difendersi costruì molte fortificazioni lungo le coste ancora oggi visibili come per esempio il Castello di Vernazza tutt'oggi molto ben conservato con le case costruite che fungono da cinta muraria. Molto interessanti, e tuttora fortunatamente visibili, sono anche il Castello di Riomaggiore, le Torri di Monterosso e il Castello di Manarola.

Villages with a history one thousand years long, when at the beginning of the XVI century, pirates's incursions started in Liguria. In 1545 they stardted from Algery and reached Monterosso, doing pillages and pridated the local inhabitants who were mainly farmers; the pirates obliged those farmers to follow them. Genoa didn't have the possibility to defence itself, so it started to build a lot of fortress along the coasts; these fortress are still visible such as the Vernazza's Castle, that is still well kept with the houses that warked as a wall. Moreover, you can still find the the Riomaggiore's Castle, the Monterosso's Tower adn the Manarola's Castle.
